about

Growing up in the rolling hills of Missouri, I've traveled to most states in the U.S. and painted along the way.  I love being in nature and try to visit all the state parks along my travel routes.

I'm professionally trained and have my Bachelor of Fine Arts, with a major in painting and a minor in printmaking, from the Kansas City Art Institute. I also studied at Memphis College of Art and minored in graphic communication at St. Louis Community College.

I was commissioned by the Center for Disease Control to create artworks for their media campaign.  I have created murals for Kansas City's Bartle Hall Convention Center and several public schools in the Greater Metro area.

I am a recipient of the ArtsKC Fund Inspiration Grant Award and a co-recipient of a Rocket Grant project awarded by Charlotte Street Foundation and the University of Kansas Spencer Museum of Art via funding through Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

With a strong working background in graphic design and the print industry, I have created unique marketing and educational products for high profile clients including the U.S. Department of Education via an Art Model Grant.

I work mostly in my studio, using field studies and photo references pulled from places I have visited. I create scenes by appropriating and combining bits of real places that strike a chord with me; vivid memories of a place that feels magical and could easily be scenery for a classic children's tale.

I think of my window sized artworks as portals into another world where characters from the minds of Lewis Carroll or L. Frank Baum could appear at any moment on their way to a new adventure.

I create to brighten our spirits; to bring you back to the connection of nature.  I invite you to take a walk inside my joyful tranquil artwork and feel your stress melt into soft horizons.

influences

My line quality and color palette is heavily tainted by early Warner Brother's animation. I know that my love for stacked perspective is drawn from the hours I've spent playing with pop-up books while working at the Nelson Museum bookstore back in the early 90's.

Other artistic influences in random order include:
  • the Caldacott Medal winning illustrations I saw during the weekly readings by my elementary school librarian,
  • my grandmother’s junk/treasure drawer,
  • the radio show “This American Life,”
  • object collections in small town cultural and history museums,
  • and artists Edward Gorey, Shell Silverstein, Dr. Seuss, Joseph Cornell, Eva Hess, Wayne Thiebaud, Edouard Vuillard, and Hundertwasser.
